B.C.’s snow basins provide crucial water as they melt in the spring. Data from the BC River Forecast Centre shows snow basins are lower now than they were the same time last year. Currently, the snow basins are at 61 per cent of normal. They were at 79 per cent last February, before 2023’s record drought and wildfire season. The centre notes, if conditions don’t change soon, the province will be on track for a record-low waterflow and drought hazard through the spring and summer.
On that note……..Now is a good time to start getting your gardens ready for the spring and summer growing season by adding a composted aged mulch product. Composted mulch is healthy for your plants, as it provides nutrients and lightens heavy clay soils but holds moisture better than sandy soils. Mulch is both decorative and functional. Mulch—made from bark or wood chips—can be used to cover the bare ground in the beds. It will also help suppress weed growth by limiting the number of seeds that make their way into the flower bed soil and begin sprouting. Mulch also helps to hold moisture longer, so plants and flowers won't dry out as quickly. When using rock or gravel to cover flower beds, it’s a good idea to put down landscape fabric to minimize the growth of weeds. Fabric is not necessary when using bark or wood chip mulch.

It is reddish-brown and holds its colour and lasts longer than other mulches in the marketplace. It looks great in West Coast landscapes by brightening the landscape and highlighting plants. It is a premium product because it contains more bark and less wood, unlike competitor products.
